A BETTER performance this week by Whitby's batsmen gave the bowlers a target they could defend in the Esk Valley Evening League.
The wicket was hard and the square boundaries at Sleights' small ground are short.
But Andrew Marshall played a superb attacking innings, scoring 46 including three sixes and five fours.
There were few scoring contributions from his team-mates, with the exception of a battling 16 from Paul Elgey.
Nonetheless, the team's attitude was good and the running between the wickets was impressive. Whitby finished with a respectable 105.
Sleights fell behind in the run chase early on.
A superb opening spell from James Fawcett, taking two wickets for a single run in his allotted four overs, closed the door on the Sleights' hopes.
There was good support too from Ben Cooling, who took three wickets to snuff out the middle order.
Only two Sleights players managed low double figures and Whitby won the match by a healthy 22 runs.
Result: Whitby won by 22 runs

Whitby 105 for 9
(20 overs)
Andrew Marshall 46

Sleights 83 all out (19.2 overs)
Ben Cooling 3/15
