Edwardian team claim centenary cup

SLEIGHTS Bowling Club dressed in Edwardian costume in the first friendly match at Scarborough South Cliff in its centenary year.
Pat Harrison and Brian Raw won prizes for their costumes and Steve Harrison won the bottle of whisky in a competition.
The event concluded with an Edwardian afternoon tea and Sleights were presented with a trophy as winners, which is to be played for annually.

Sleights beat Scarborough South Cliff away 127-101: I Harrison, F Lawson, B Nicol, C Shardlow drew 16-16; E White, P Perry, A Fletcher, E Clark lost 12-19; JR Moore, J Blythman, C Cowen, P Harrison drew 17-17; S Harrison, B Lawson, BM Raw, L White won 17-14; B Raw, O Tordoff, H Brown, M Swalwell won 17-9; T Reid, P Shardlow, I Pearson, B McLean lost 14-16; C Gray, R Clark, L Campbell, J Moore won 34-10.
Sleights beat Marske away last Saturday in the first leg for the Ellie Hillyard Trophy and took a lead of 19 into the home game later in the season.
The following day, 19 teams took part in the Captains Pairs Competition.
This is a knockout competition where players choose their own partners and it is played over nine ends with four woods each.
Among the many excellent first round games, Terry Bogg and Terry Reid beat Mick Dean and James Bedford. Roly and Eileen Clark beat Colin Gray and Joyce Blythman.
John and Jean Moore beat Eddie and Lucy White, and Steve Harrison and Eric Sanderson beat Ian and Pat Harrison.
In the semi finals, club captain Steve Harrison and Eric Sanderson beat John Pybus and Mary Swalwell while Benny and Freda Lawson beat John and Jean Moore.
The final was played in light rain and it was Benny and Freda who appeared to cope slightly better with these conditions, with Freda getting her woods near the jack on even the longest of ends.
It was a close game, but the husband and wife team of Benny and Freda Lawson were popular winners.
