SLEIGHTS Singers are set to celebrate their centenary anniversary this year with some special events planned in the next few weeks.
Here the Whitby Gazette takes a trip down Memory Lane featuring some pictures kindly donated by the choir's conductor Ernie Marsden.
The Singers are the oldest and only remaining mixed voice choir in the district.
They formed in 1908 from the Sleights and Grosmont Glee Club and had their first meeting as Sleights Choral Society on 16 October in Sleights Schoolroom directly across the road from where they now rehearse at Sleights' Church House.
He said: "It is quite probable that our origins go back more than 100 years.
"This was the time of the rapid growth throughout the country of amateur choral societies as distinct from church and chapel choirs.
"At that date there were some half a dozen or so societies in an area encompassing Hawsker, Castleton and Goathland."
The choir's first concert was held in February 1909 and a month later they competed in the eighth Eskdale Tournament of Song which is now held annually in Whitby Pavilion.
The choir rehearse every Thursday at 7.15pm until 9pm and are always pleased to welcome new members who are willing to make a weekly commitment.
This year is also a time of celebration for Sleights Village Hall and Church House in Sleights.
And to celebrate there will be an open day at Church House tomorrow from 10am to 4pm presented by the Whitby and District Model Railway Club.
Next Friday Sleights Singers will celebrate the combined anniversaries in the village in the village hall at 7pm.
This will be a musical celebration also starring the children of Sleights Primary School.
There will be an interval supper included in the £3 admission charge.
Next Sunday also sees the celebrations continue with a special Churches Together Service at Sleights' St John's Church at 6.30pm when the choir will participate in the service performing songs from their first public appearance right back in 1908.
Keep your eye on the Whitby Gazette for more information and reaction about the celebrations.
