This year's Littlebeck Rose Queen is following in her mum's footsteps.
Twelve-year-old Laura Forster’s mum Liz was Rose Queen in 1983 .
The 54th Rose Queen, Laura will travel on a throne on a raft down the river to the mill garden in keeping with tradition. She will get off on the opposite side of the bank to the audience where she is crowned by the retiring rose queen Alison Marsay.
They will sit and watch the performance by the children and then Alison is waved off by the crowd as she floats back down the river.
The event takes place on Tuesday.
Liz (40) told the Gazette: “When I did it was a lot of fun. In those days there were a lot of children in Littlebeck and you had to wait your turn to be Rose Queen but there are not so many children living in the village now.
“In my memory we’ve always had good weather for the Rose Queen but rehearsals in wellies have been known.”
Laura will wear a blue cocktail dress and Liz remembers her dress was also blue and had a lace overlay.
The event is organised by Littlebeck Village Hall Committee and doors open at 1.30pm.
There will be stalls, games, raffle, tombola, cream teas, hot dogs and ice creams.
Julia Weeks owns the Old Mill at Littlebeck where the event is held.
She told the Gazette: “In the past I have had up to 300 people in the grounds and raised around £2,000.
“We had good weather last year and are praying for fine weather this year but we do have marquees up just in case.”
This year’s performance of Sleeping Beauty has a cast of 12 whose ages range from four to 15.
Dancers from the Alison Radcliffe school of dance in Redcar will also be performing on the day. Admission is £2 for adults and 50p for children.
There will be a dominoes drive and supper in the Village Hall at 7.45pm, £2 entry.
The raffle will be drawn at the end of the evening. All proceeds go towards the upkeep of the village hall.
The original idea for the Rose Queen ceremony was to raise money to build the village hall.
