A Local man is to retire after 26 years as headteacher of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School in Loftus.
Michael Atkinson, of Sleights, was one of the longest-serving heads in East Cleveland, and at 60 years old is looking forward to retirement.
He takes with him many memories from his time at the school, which he joined in 1982 and recalls “when I was asked by the governors whether I would stay at the school for a minimum of two years my response was I would stay for as long as I was happy”.
During his time as headteacher Mr Atkinson helped encourage sports for both boys and girls spurred on by his love of football, sought real experiences for children through residential trips but most of all brought a love of learning to the school.
He said: “Over the years I have worked with wonderful staff, governors and parents and I would like to thank them for helping St Joseph’s become a special place for children.”
Chairman of governors Steve Bowman said of Mr Atkinson: “Mike has guided St Joseph’s wisely and on behalf of all governors, past and present, we wish him all the best in his impending retirement and greatly thank him for his hard work and commitment over the years.”
His wife, Liz is also retiring from her role as special needs consultant for schools across the region.
With both their retirements just around the corner he hopes to spend more time with his family and focus more on his passion for gardening.
Having recently acquired a caravan he is looking to spend some time on holiday.
A garden party to celebrate Mr Atkinson’s successful career was held at St Joseph’s School in Loftus on 5 July.
