STRAWBERRY tarts and cups of tea were on offer as crowds flocked to an annual open garden event.
Susan and Gwyn Davies of Ruswarp opened their two-acre garden to the public for the fourth time in order to raise money for Whitby in Bloom, with numbers of visitors close to 100.
The event raised £500 as spectators savoured strawberry tarts in th
e sunshine – much like the old-fashioned portrayal of a traditional British summer.
Mrs Davies, who is a member of the University 3rd Age Garden Group, said: “We were thrilled by the response to what has become an annual event.
“It was lovely to see so many people turn out to support the Whitby in Bloom group again.
“The event has always been successful but this year has been the best ever – much down to the glorious weather I think.
“A big thank you to everyone who came and contributed to the day, with special thanks to Jessie Holmes and Ann Stevenson who did a sterling job at the kitchen sink, and to Gwen Tidy, Mollie Grove, Beverely Brown and Molly Galpin for their generous donations.”
Mrs Davies said how many of the visitors expressed an interest in making the open gardens day an event for the whole village to take part in, and explained that the money raised from the opening of her garden will be given to the Whitby in Bloom group who will decide what to do with it.
“We are hoping to create a crocus sun on Whitby’s East side to match the crocus river on Mayfield road which got a fantastic response from both locals and visitors.”
