I am writing in response to the letters page regarding the police officer who arrested the bus driver.
I find it very narrow minded of the author of this letter to cast aspersions on this officer’s intellect when it appears as if he was just doing his job.

It seems as if there are a lot of people in this town who like nothing more than a whinge.
I am constantly reading about and hearing stories of anti-social behaviour in this town and the police always seem to bear the grunt of this and are consistently accused of not doing their job.

How can an officer, who was obviously doing his job, be slated?

It is nonsense.

I feel it was perfectly right to arrest the bus driver.

Why should a person of responsibility (someone who carries around passengers who may be young, vulnerable or elderly) get away with behaving in an obviously aggressive manner?

I appreciate some people may have had to wait a little longer for a bus driver, but I would rather that than be on a bus where an aggressive driver commits road rage and actually injures someone.

Surely then he would have done for using his bus as an offensive weapon and would have got a lot more than a ticket?

I think he should consider himself lucky.

As for the officer demonstrating the gesture to the people in the queue, what else was he supposed to do?

I would have done the same thing if I had been asked what head had done and if I were in his shoes.

A big fuss seems to have been created about this, but the way I see it, is that the officer was just answering a direct question, he was hardly using it in the same manner as the bus driver.

He was merely doing the job that the majority of rate payers expect a police officer to do.

We all would have expected the police officer to take exactly the same action and deal with this individual if the bus driver had made the gesture at us, so what is all the fuss about?

I think we should give our local police a bit more support, they are not trying to take over society, they are just normal human beings doing a very difficult job with very little support from either their managers or us.

How can we expect them to give us any help and support if as all we do is slate them?
